This initiative is being designed to close the Racial Achievement
Gap in
reading, math, and language proficiency for middle and junior high
school students. Research based on Meridian Public School District
test scores in these three areas show that there is a need in this
community for children entering into the 6th , 7th and 8th grade.
RAGs to Riches will be based on the successful Community of Hope
Tutoring Program (a United Way agency) that focuses on tutoring
designated children in K-5. Students enrolled in this program
are tutored by qualified high school students for 4 hours a week (2
hours of one-on-one and 2 hours of group) throughout the school
year. The high school student, at the completion of the term, is
awarded a $750 scholarship to the college of their choice.
