Thanks to funding from the Riley Foundation, This year's
United Way / Riley Foundation Supply Our Students program delivered
1300 book bags to seven Meridian Public Elementary Schools. The book
bags were filled with necessary school supplies, such as magic
markers, folders, paper, pens, pencils, scissors, notebooks, glue,
colored pencils, and crayons. With help from the NAS Shipmates and
Riley Memorial Hospital, the volunteers packed the book bags in
record time! Mississippi Power provided the packing facilities and
United Way staff organized the event. Once the book bags were
packed, Meridian Public Schools picked up and delivered the books
bags to the schools. While a few of the schools were giving out book
bags during registration, other schools will be distributing the
book bags to children through the counselor's office on the first
day of school. This method of distribution ensures the children with
the most need will receive the book bags. There are approximately
2400 elementary students registered in the Meridian Public School
District, according to Deputy Superintendent, Robert Markham. The
Supply Our Students program reached over half of those students; a
tremendous increase from when the program began 4 years ago with
only 500 book bags. The response from the school principals and
teachers was a unanimous "Thank You!!".
